This project is an initiative in support of the global #BreakFreefromPlastic movement.
For those wanting to take positive action to reduce the impact of plastic on our lives there are many ways to approach the issue; in this case the issue was looked at from the point of view of plastic entering the ocean from the UK, starting with research produced by Greenpeace that identified the main routes to the sea as (i) Our rubbish (mainly litter), (ii) Products that go down the drain and (iii) Industrial leakage.
In addition to Hackney Council’s #ZeroWasteHackney challenge, in Hackney, from all sorts of organisations and activists, there is a lot of support: for those wishing to reduce the impact of single use plastic in their daily lives; for shops and suppliers wishing to go plastic free (partially or fully); for campaigns putting pressure on manufacturers and suppliers.
Many volunteers are giving their time for litter picks but there is room for more action on litter and this project has been set up to supplement existing activity to attempt to make some impact on behaviour at street level.
